SPORTS BAR TURNS PUNK AFTER RUGBY WORLD CUP

You know how you were afraid to come to Kingsland for the last two months, cause you'd be swept away in a sea of flags and spat out on the pavement by the 'Kingslander', with sprig marks on your face ... well, there's a NEW BAR IN TOWN and it's gonna change EVERYTHING!  Actually, it's an old bar, and it's got a really dramatic name ('Sports Bar') but guess what ... sport is DEAD .. and punk REIGNS AGAIN!  (Or maybe for the first time ...) because on Saturday night, December 10th, for the first time ever, The Sports Bar will host a ROCK line-up ... and you can be part of the revolution, this mass metal mobilization over the motorway.  EVIL, semi-repatriated London powerful trio featuring David Mitchell, Liz Mathews and Roddy Pain, are the headliners, but there's also OCTOPUS (think Norweigian fisherwoman metal), STUD (a disco gangstress), MY-OH (from Dunedin, which makes it international) and DJ Raw Chicken (damaged and danceable).  But that's NOT ALL:  there are $5 pints, specials on Woodies and Cruisers, and free karaoke on five screens.  Yes ... it's a real sports bar, but with great live music ... don't miss this, cause otherwise you'll be the one rolling their eyes in boredom when everyone else shares their anecdotes about how they were there on the FIRST NIGHT.

Octopus debut album

Free for you on our bandcamp
"Octopus describe their music as “Norwegian Fisherwoman Metal”. If that sounds prog, Octopus are progressive, but in the mode of Sabbath, rather than Pink Floyd; they’re avant-garde in the manner of Lightning Bolt, rather than La Monte Young. Octopus make exciting, unpretentious music that calls on the popular tradition of metal, not the muted modishness of the art school. This band has revolutionary energy. Going to an Octopus gig can be intimidating — the two musicians (Liz Matthews on drums, Beth Dawson on guitar) play at a deafening volume. But as demonstrated on Black Ink, this volume and exuberance isn’t deployed meaninglessly: many of Octopus’s songs are tales, novelistic pieces, rock operas without any loss of primitive energy, yet with the opera’s emotional space. Octopus plumb the depths of tradition to build a bed of noise, but their poetic vision is levitated far above the surface of the sea." Maryann Savage
